Department of Justice Joins Legal Challenge to Block the State of California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
