Educating an Infant to Grow into an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Investment?

Child education concept
The organization responsible for the advertisement claims that what seems like "luxury or oddity" is truly "deliberate investment in initial learning".

"Parents located in North London wants to find an remarkable and skilled educator to assist their youngest child on his first steps to becoming an British gentleman."

Looking at this listing, you might naturally miss the wording "beginning" as simple figurative language.

However, it could be the most important aspect of this unusual job advert, as it aims to find a teacher for a infant.

Hundreds of responses have already been sent in since the unnamed family advertised their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who needs to be "a uniquely qualified person".

During the past few weeks, the listing has gained notice in the press, with several wondering why?

Progressive Approach

The CEO, chief executive of Tutors International, which is helping the family in their quest, said that notwithstanding initial skepticism, he viewed the plan "far sighted", and "progressive".

When he met the family, he mentioned they recognized the atypical nature of their demand, and how young their son is.

Nevertheless, they explained that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to get a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that age "cultural bias had by then taken hold".

But what did the family refer to by "cultural leaning"?

It's "everything", Adam answered. "How you eat, how you speak".

He said the elder child had absorbed "extremely delicate, unspoken signals" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family informed him they wished to avoid history to recur with their younger child.

The intention: To bring in a British tutor, who should speak with Received Pronunciation, to influence the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency state the post has started a larger debate about how families perceive learning, privilege and the role of home and culture in education.

Natural Absorption

"A lot of the learning at the outset here is rather acquired indirectly," explained Adam.

It's by means of this subtle influence that the family are expecting the child will adopt the British traits they aim to cultivate.

Adam noted the tutor needed to be somebody who went to "the right kinds of schools – the same kinds of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The instructor must be the appropriate candidate, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, simply by nature," he said.

Money No Object

The family informed him the chosen tutor should ideally also have knowledge of or enthusiasm in equestrian activities, alpine skiing, artistic pursuits and instrumental training so as to shape the child in a broad spectrum of hobbies.

Furthermore though, he stated the family hoped the tutor to sign up the child on a variety of courses so the child would be "pony-riding and picking up an tool by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's perspective, guiding their son grow into a "British gentleman" will lead to accomplishment and provide access.

"Taking into account the pros and cons of that, because it's undoubtedly a status symbol," he comments.

Yet, despite all this instruction in "UK identity", could the child absorb so-called cultural leaning from the international family he resides with anyway?

"Certainly", replied the CEO. "The family know this could fail, but they've merely embraced the attitude of, 'we should try and let's go as quickly as we can', because the price of it is not a concern," he stated.

Impractical

A number of in the tutoring industry who express these concerns.

Another CEO, CEO and founder of Blue Education, who supplies private tutors, commented that "the development of adopting dual cultures, or actually, becoming oneself, is something that must be experienced personally, not designed."

The expert noted that he had emigrated from China to the United Kingdom at the period of 7 years old, and had been brought up understanding and practicing two backgrounds. He progressed to study at a prestigious UK institution.

The executive was the first individual born in the People's Republic of China to be elected to the role of Finance Head of the Cambridge Union.

"The idea that one individual can serve as a living vessel of Britishness, a person who can possibly transfer the qualities of a British gentleman upon a infant child, seems to me naive and unrealistic," he wrote.

"Based on my background, having a distinctly English tutor from babyhood will not instantly achieve the goal they hope for.

"I wasn't provided with that kind of mentor, and nevertheless I have been privileged enough to experience many of the experiences they desire for their son."

He continued: "The truth is, cultural identity should not be imposed from the outside; it must be embraced, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Of course, English culture is something Adam hopes can be educated – and sold.

"I believe the fact that the international society holds us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
